As the wife of an army officer, I’ve had the privilege of calling many places home. Each new posting has been a chapter in our family’s story, but also a wellspring of inspiration for my poetry. Today, I want to share how travel and relocation have shaped my writing over the years.
- New Landscapes, New Metaphors: From the sun-baked plains of Rajasthan to the misty hills of Sikkim, each landscape offers a fresh palette of images and metaphors. The stark beauty of the desert taught me about resilience and hidden depths, while the lush forests of the Northeast spoke of growth and interconnectedness.
- Cultural Kaleidoscope: India’s diversity never ceases to amaze me. Each state, sometimes each district, brings new customs, festivals, and ways of life. This cultural richness has added layers to my poetry, allowing me to explore themes of identity and belonging in nuanced ways.
- Language and Dialects: While I write primarily in English, exposure to various Indian languages and dialects has influenced my rhythm and word choice. Sometimes, a perfectly untranslatable word in Bengali or Malayalam finds its way into my English verse, adding a unique flavor.
- People and Their Stories: Every place comes with its cast of characters – the cheerful chai wallah, the wise old grandmother next door, the enthusiastic local guide. Their stories often weave themselves into my poems, bringing authenticity and human connection to my work.
- Challenges and Growth: Let’s be honest – constant relocation isn’t always easy. The challenges of setting up a new home, finding schools for the kids, making new friends – these experiences have added depth to my writing, exploring themes of adaptability and resilience.
- Historical Contexts: Living in different parts of India has given me a deeper appreciation for our country’s rich history. From ancient temples to colonial-era cantonment areas, historical contexts often find their way into my poetry, connecting past and present.
- Nature’s Diversity: From the mighty Himalayas to the serene backwaters of Kerala, India’s natural diversity is awe-inspiring. These varied landscapes have not only featured in my nature poems but have also served as powerful backdrops for more introspective pieces.
Travel, I’ve found, is not just about the destination; it’s about the journey – both external and internal. Each move has pushed me out of my comfort zone, challenged my perspectives, and ultimately, enriched my art.
To my fellow writers out there – how has travel influenced your work? And to the army families constantly on the move – how do you find inspiration in your nomadic lifestyle? Share your experiences in the comments below!
